Buying guide: how to choose the right audio interface

How many inputs do you need?

If you record yourself (one voice or one guitar at a time), a single preamp works. If you want to sing and play guitar at the same time, or record a stereo pair, get two. Every interface here except the Audient iD4 MKII has two mic preamps.

Why preamp gain matters

Condenser mics are loud and need little gain. Dynamic mics such as the Shure SM7B are quiet and often need 60 dB or more. With 64 to 69 dB, the SSL 2 MKII and Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen handle quiet mics more comfortably than a 50 dB interface.

Do you need 192 kHz or 32-bit?

Not really. 24-bit at 44.1 or 48 kHz is the working standard for music. Higher rates use more disk space and CPU. Treat sample rate as a tie-breaker, which is why it carries only 5% of the score.

Extras that save money later

Loopback matters if you stream or podcast. MIDI ports matter if you own hardware synths. A second headphone output matters if you record with a friend.

How this ranking is calculated

Score = weighted average of normalised specs, out of 10. Full method

Mic preamp gainMore clean gain lets quiet dynamic mics (like an SM7B) reach a healthy level without an inline booster. Scale: 40 → 70 dB.
25%
Input dynamic rangeHigher means a lower noise floor relative to the loudest signal the input can capture. Scale: 100 → 120 dB.
20%
Monitor output dynamic rangeCleaner outputs mean you hear your mix, not the converter's hiss. Scale: 100 → 130 dB.
15%
Preamp noise (EIN)Equivalent input noise: more negative is quieter. Scale: -120 → -131 dBu.
15%
Mic preampsTwo preamps let you record a singer and an instrument (or two mics) at once. Scale: 0 → 2.
10%
Max sample rateNice to have; 44.1 or 48 kHz is plenty for most music. Scale: 48 → 192 kHz.
5%
LoopbackLets you stream or podcast with computer audio mixed in.
5%
5-pin MIDI I/OConnect hardware synths and drum machines without a separate MIDI interface.

Frequently asked questions

Which audio interface is best for a beginner?

Any interface in this list will sound clean. If you plan to use a quiet dynamic mic, favour high gain (Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen, SSL 2 MKII). If you stream, favour loopback (UA Volt 2 Gen 2, SSL 2 MKII).

Can I plug a guitar straight into these?

Yes for the Scarlett 2i2, Volt 2 Gen 2, MOTU M2, SSL 2 MKII and iD4 MKII, which all list instrument (Hi-Z or JFET) inputs in their specs. Check the PreSonus product page for the Studio 24c.

Do these work with an iPad?

Several are class compliant or iOS compatible (for example the Audient iD4 MKII and MOTU M2), but bus power from a tablet can be limited. Check the manufacturer page linked in the sources for your exact setup.

How did you rank them?

With a weighted score built only from published specs. The weights are listed on this page and on our How we rank page. We have not run lab tests, so sound character is not part of the score.
